Free Wu Tang Clan backgrounds
- Founded in Staten Island's Park Hill projects ("Killah
Hills") by Genius "GZA" and Ol' Dirty Bastard, Wu-Tang were
inspired by the 1987-88 success of the Juice Crew (Marley
Marl, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Kool G. Rap, Roxanne Shante)
to strike out on their own. Prince Rakeem "the RZA" is the
mastermind, producing all Wu-Tang product, as well as the
numerous solo albums (and running two record labels, Razor
Sharp and Wu-Tang and a merchandising arm for clothes). Genius
"GZA" keeps things level-headed; while Ol' Dirty Bastard and
Method Man represent the loonier extreme. Raekwon and
Ghostface Killah work the traditional grounds of tales from
the hood. Like a doo-wop group, U-God holds down the bottom
end; Masta Killah and Inspectah Deck are second-tier but still
integral to the swarming mix. |
